Role Playing 01/31/2009

There used to be times when you bought a thing, it just did the thing you bought it for. Record players played records. Discmen spun CDs. Game consoles played games. No more, no less. Then the PlayStation 2 became the best-selling console in history by doubling as a DVD player. Now consoles have gone beyond mere multitasking, enduring to transform themselves with new functions long after you bring 'em home.

Think of this as a new front in the ongoing console wars. Nintendo's Wii won the first round by proudly claiming to be a games-only machine — unlike Sony and Microsoft's multimedia powerhouses — to facilitate their low price point. "We wanted consumers to be able to access our products on a lower budget. That's why [we made] the initial decision to leave a DVD player and a lot of other functionality out of the system," explains Nintendo Canada spokesman Matt Ryan. "The other thing is, how many DVD players do people have in their houses? I've got three. I don't need three."

Prince Ray 01/27/2009

If we go by the reviews, the whole idea behind SPRay sounds pretty unique and interesting, as you play the role of the character Prince Ray here, who has to try and save his kingdom which is at present being ruled by Queen Mordack. Queen Mordack has taken things over by making everyone slaves, and taking complete control of the villages, etc. Prince Ray ends up with a magical crown which sets him off on this journey to try and save his kingdom.
In stipulations of the graphics, there really is not all that much here to be overwhelmed by, as the Wii can certainly pump out better graphics than this. The colors are not vibrant enough, animations need more blaze, and the areas can get pretty weak quickly.  On the positive-side of things though, the frame rate is pretty steady.

Anime 01/27/2009

Nintendo did off late catch up with Tatsunoko. Tatsunoko is a Japanese animation studio responsible for some of the biggest Japanese cartoons, but probably not many you know of. They did the original anime version of speed racer, which was bottomed on the manga. Sadly, they don’t own the rights to speed and that’s why he doesn’t make an appearance in this game. They also made Gatchaman, which was re-edited for America as Battle of the Planets and then later as G-Force.
That’s where the playable Ken the Eagle comes from and is the only character I remembered seeing from our childhood. He also happens to be a great character in the game. A nice rival to Capcom’s Ryu, with a cape.

Its All Music 01/19/2009

The Nintendo Wii seems to have a knack for sub-par Wii-exclusive music games. To be honest, it's the better of the three but that's not saying too much. The first thing I noticed was that the menu system felt awkward and was difficult to navigate -- especially once I had made my band. And making the band wasn't all that great, either.

Once I figured out where to go to actually play the game, I was treated to a pretty good assortment of songs from big-name artists including The Jonas Brothers and The All American Rejects. Many of the tracks are the original recordings, too. Playing the songs, though, proved less pleasurable. The top-down view of the notes was nothing special and the band itself ironically lacked pop.

The UK video games market as a whole recently reported a 23 percent rise in software sales in 2008, with total hardware and software revenues of £4.034 billion ($6.071bn) for the year. The same data also showed Nintendo registering almost 40 million software units sold across the Wii and Nintendo DS.

Mario Kart Wii was released in April and has remained in the top ten ever since -– except when hit by frequent supply constraints. The game also enjoyed a four-week run at the number one spot in the individual platform chart over Christmas. The second best-selling individual platform game of 2008 was Wii Fit. Indeed, all top five selling games are Nintendo platform exclusives, with Wii Play at number three, Brain Training (aka Brain Age) for DS at number four (even though it released in June 2006) and Sega co-production Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii at number five.

Edge has promised to release ten most promising Wii titles of 2009. Wii has been suffering from an identity crisis following Nintendo’s E3 no-show. Keeping the sales figure aside, 2008 was a weak year for the console’s software catalogue. The result of this is that publishing companies and their PR teams avail the opportunity to push core gamer content on to the console.

In the list, only the super confirmed 2009 releases are included so this might change over time. The ten titles which have made the list are Wii Sports Resort, The Conduit, Deadly Creatures, House of the Dead: Overkill, Monster Hunter 2 (tri-), Fatal Frame IV, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Sin and Punishment 2, Punch Out!!, MadWorld.
